研究領域：

長期致力于魚類粘孢子蟲及魚類寄生蟲的其他類群的研究。

主要學術成就：

1. 趙元莙迄今發(fā)現并命名了淡水魚類寄生粘孢子蟲59新種，單殖吸蟲29新種，纖毛蟲13新種，鞭毛蟲4新種；海洋粘孢子蟲47新種。共計發(fā)表魚類寄生蟲新種120余種。

2. 先后對黃渤海和東海的海洋魚類粘孢子及其病害進行了較為系統的的研究，并建立海洋魚類寄生粘孢蟲47新種，33新組合，報道了近20種國內新記錄；還研究了雙殼目粘孢子蟲系統演化，提出將目前已知的雙殼目的53屬歸入4個亞目中，厘定了雙目粘孢子蟲新的分類安排；還對世界海洋魚類粘孢子蟲的40個屬及569個種的寄生及寄生部位，地理分布進行了全面的清理。該研究的系列成果正在國內外重要學術刊物上陸續(xù)發(fā)表。

3. 近10年來，在國家自然科學基金項目“長江中上游游走類纖毛蟲的分類學與系統學研究”為代表的項目資助下，帶領研究團隊對淡水魚類寄生車輪蟲的分類學混亂、不實正在進行著清理性研究，已分類鑒定40種（含13新種）。相關研究結果在國內外重要學術刊物發(fā)表論文10余篇；獲得國內外同行的高度評價。2005.7受12th 國際原生動物學大會組委會邀請擔任大會的“原生動物多樣性及系統學”專題主持人。2006.7受6th 亞太纖毛蟲國際會議組委會邀請擔任大會的“纖毛蟲原生動物分類學與系統學”專題主持人。

4. 主研或主持了20多項課題的研究，如中國科學院研究基金、國家自然科學基金及四川省高教局專項經費聯合資助的“四川省魚類寄生粘孢子蟲的研究”，“四川省魚類寄生單殖吸蟲的研究”，國家自然科學基金資助的“四川省魚類寄生蟲及寄生蟲病的研究”，山東省優(yōu)秀青年科學家基金資助的“海洋寄生原生動物的研究”，“長江學者獎勵計劃”，教育部骨干教師資助項目等課題。主持完成的項目有國家自然科學基金項目“東南沿海魚類寄生粘孢子蟲分類學與系統學研究（No. 30570221）”，“海洋魚類寄生粘孢子蟲的分類學與動物地理學研究（No. 30370172）”；有重慶市自然科學基金重點項目“水生動物外來入侵病原蟲生物學研究與寄生原蟲庫的程序性建設研究”；重慶市自然科學基金項目“幾種粘孢子蟲DNA序列結構的測定及其系統地位分析（No. kj050811）”和“水生動物病原蟲生物學研究與程序性病原蟲庫的建設研究”；還有重慶市教委科研基金資助的“雙殼目粘孢子蟲SSUrDNA序列結構的測定研究（No. 040811）”等項目。參與了中國動物志粘孢子蟲綱（冊/卷）和中國動物志單殖吸蟲綱（冊/卷）（中國動物志系列）的編寫，不僅對我國四川、新疆、貴州等地的水系（淡水）中魚類寄生粘孢子蟲和魚類寄生單殖吸蟲有深入系統的研究，而且對我國海洋魚類寄生粘孢子蟲正在進行了系統的研究。填補了我國海洋魚類寄生粘孢子蟲研究的空白。新近還進行著魚類寄生粘孢子蟲DNA分子標記研究。相關研究結果在國內外重要學術刊物發(fā)表或待發(fā)表；獲得國內外同行的高度評價。
